On the 1st January 2018 I set off on my mission to start up Higgler. Naturally I wanted to dive in at the deep end, so my first destination was India. Though I did manage to persuade my mum to join me for the first two weeks for moral support.
She loved it.
… no really, she absolutely loved it! She even managed to out shop me and didn’t want to leave but before we knew it, it was time for her to head back to the UK and I was officially alone.
Newly solo, I continued to travel around India and ventured further south to Sri Lanka.
Before long, my next adventure was to travel overland across East Africa. The thought daunted me but there I was flying into Addis Ababa, Eithiopia. A dala dala, tuk tuk, boda boda, matatu, scooter and sidecar, ferry & rental car later and I’d made it all the way down to South Africa! On route I stopped off in Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia & Zimbabwe. I mostly travelled alone but I also made lots of lovely friends on the way and kept meeting up with As Seen From The Sidecar on route too.
Next stop was Jamaica where I stayed out in the countryside with my Nannie and learned to live without a hot shower for 84 days…. not that I was counting!
I flew to Colombia and then sailed to Panama through the San Blas Islands.
Travelled overland across Panama & Costa Rica before hopping up to Guatemala.
...and lastly, a quick stop in Canada before flying home to the UK for a good cup of tea.
All the while I was seeking out talented artisans and making a collection to share with you back home.
Of course, it wasn’t always this plain sailing… keep your eyes peeled to find out what mishaps and adventures I encountered along the way.
